Oppo Reno12 and Reno12 Pro arrive with quad-curved displays, thinner and lighter builds

Oppo is refreshing its popular Reno line with two new models – Reno12 and Reno12 Pro – which are the first to feature a quad-curved curved display. Also, they are thinner and lighter than their Reno11 predecessors and at the same time they are tougher than them too.

The Oppo Reno12 features a 6.7” OLED display with 1,080 x 2,412px resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. That is similar to the previous model, though now the top and bottom edges are curved too, not just the sides.

Unlike the Reno11 models, these two feature Gorilla Glass protection on the front. The phone’s mid-frame is made out of die-cast aluminum alloy, which withstands compression much better, helping to reduce damage if you drop your phone on a hard surface. Something else the old models didn’t have was an IP rating, but the 12-series is water resistant (IP65). On top of that, the display works even if it and your fingers are wet.

You’d think that this ruggedness comes at the cost of bulk, but it’s the other way around – the Reno12 measures 7.25mm thick and weighs 179g, while the Reno11 was 7.6mm and 184g.

The Oppo Reno12 Pro is a bit thicker and heavier at 7.55mm and 183g, though that’s still below the 8.2mm and 190g of the previous Pro. Both Reno12 phones have the same batteries – 5,000mAh with 80W charging. Oppo says that the phones will retain 95% of their original battery capacity after 1,000 charge cycles. Anyway, both use the same display too – so why the difference?

It’s the cameras – the Pro model has a 50MP main camera with an IMX890 image sensor (1/1.56”, 1.0µm pixels) in addition to a 50MP 2x telephoto module and an 8MP ultra wide.

The vanilla model has a smaller 50MP sensor in the main (LYT600, 1/1.95”) along with the same 50MP 2x tele and 8MP ultra wide. Both phones use the same 50MP front-facing camera as well.

Another thing that differentiates the Oppo Reno12 and the Pro is the compute power they have on tap. The vanilla model gets the Dimensity 8250, which is basically the same chip as the 8200 that was in the Reno11, but with a new coat of paint. The phone is available in 12/256GB, 16/256GB, 12/512GB and 16/512GB configurations.

The Reno12 Pro is powered by the Dimensity 9200+, which replaces the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 of the previous model (note: this is for the Chinese model, the global variants were a step down). The Pro model comes in 12/256GB, 16/256GB and 16/512GB versions. Both phones use LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 3.1 storage.

Since 2024 is the year of AI, Oppo included some smart features into the camera app. It can fix the photo if someone blinked, remove people who walked into the frame and help you replace the background.

Additional AI features include transcription and summarization of dictations and a document scanner that can handle even tricky things like math formulas. The phone’s Xiaobu assistant can even act as an English teacher and a primary school tutor. The AI can also help plan your next vacation and you can use it to create a custom itinerary.
