New Minecraft Dungeons Diary speaks about the lore behind the game

Asking the question of how to expand the Minecraft universe is tough, and answering it is even harder. Mojang is accomplishing just that with Minecraft Dungeons, a Diablo-them-up dungeon looter that exists alongside Minecraft and Minecraft Earth to create what is now a fully fledged franchise. Mojang has just released a new Minecraft Dungeons Diary that talks in-depth about the process of building out lore for the game, while staying within the confines of Minecraft.

The video follows others like one that discusses different environments in the game. It’s definitely worth a watch, as it talks about the “why” behind the things players will be doing in Minecraft Dungeons, most notably about the games primary antagonist, the Arch-Illager. In Minecraft Dungeons, the illagers are the residing force of baddies that you must overcome, but their leader is a bit of an enigma.

The new diary discusses how the Arch-Illager is in fact a misshapen villager who was ridiculed and pushed out of his life, and came across the Orb of Dominance in his despair. The Orb gave him immense amounts of power, and his despair became rage. The lore in Minecraft Dungeons is there to make the game feel more real and personal than “go here, kill this” that other similar games sometimes fall into.

Finally, the team goes over how proud they are of the ending, and how they hope that Minecraft Dungeons will walk away being pleasantly surprised by the decisions they’ll have to make, and the consequences of those decisions. Hopefully we shouldn’t have to wait too long to find out, assuming the game still releases within its April 2020 launch window.
