Updated October 18, 2019: Developer Lucas Pope replied to us on Twitter and said that the game “supports” 4K resolution due to its fixed presentation, but he wouldn’t called it “enhanced.”

Around the same time last year, a game called Return of the Obra Dinn delighted gamers on PC. It not only garnered great reviews, but in many ways, it’s regarded as a modern cult classic. What exactly defines that category? In my opinion, a game that pushing the boundaries visually in new directions, has a stellar story, and compelling gameplay can be called a modern cult classic. Return of the Obra Dinn has all of these, especially when it comes to a visual front.

For those of you unfamiliar with the title, Return of the Obra Dinn is a first-person mystery adventure based on exploration and logical deduction. In 1802, the merchant ship Obra Dinn set out from London for the Orient with over two hundred tons of trade goods. Six months later, it hadn’t met its rendezvous point at the Cape of Good Hope and was declared lost at sea. However, that’s not how the story ends. In 1807, the Obra Dinn drifts into the port at Falmouth with damaged sails and no visible crew. As an insurance investigator for the East India Company’s London Office, dispatch immediately to Falmouth, finds means to board the ship, and prepare an assessment of damages.

If you’re in the market for an amazing game, be sure to check out Return of the Obra Dinn. It’s available for $20 through the Microsoft Store. The store description says that it runs at 4K resolution on Xbox One X. Due to the pixelated nature of the game, we were unable to verify this, but it definitely looks sharp on a 4K display. The menus seem like they’re still 1080p, but the gameplay is crystal clear. Hopefully, Digital Foundry will do a visual analysis so we’ll know for sure.
