Motorola’s foldable Razr is slightly delayed because of high demand

Foldable smartphones and delays seem to really go hand in hand. Samsung’s Galaxy Fold had some design issues, Huawei’s Mate X took many more months to reach the market than initially planned, and now it’s Razr’s turn.

Motorola’s reimagined Razr that boasts a foldable screen in that iconic form factor was announced last month, and apparently people really love it. At least that’s what the company is blaming for a slight delay in its launch. Here’s the full statement circulated by Motorola today:

Since its announcement in November, the new motorola razr has received unparalleled excitement and interest from consumers. Demand has been high, and as a result, has quickly outgrown supply predictions.

Motorola has decided to adjust razr’s presale and launch timing to better meet consumer demand. We are working to determine the appropriate quantity and schedule to ensure that more consumers have access to razr at launch.

We do not anticipate a significant shift from our original availability timeline.

So the good news is that this isn’t going to be as huge of a delay as what we’ve seen for the Galaxy Fold and Mate X. The bad news is that Motorola still doesn’t have new dates to talk about – for the start of pre-orders, for the release, that sort of thing.

Additionally, while it’s clear that this applies to the US, it’s unclear if it applies only to the US. Over there, the Razr was supposed to go on pre-order on December 26, ahead of availability in stores on January 9. Now it’s looking less and less likely that pre-orders are going to start in 2019.

The phone will be exclusive to Verizon in the States, and priced at $1,500. That’s not cheap in any way, but it looks like nostalgia rules – if this is indeed a case of “unparalleled excitement and interest from consumers”, as the company says. If you want to learn more about the new Razr while you wait for it to show up on the market, don’t miss our hands-on report.
