Creeping Winter comes to Minecraft Dungeons on September 8, 2020, so Mojang Studios is starting off the one week countdown with a sneak peek at some upcoming gear being added in the new expansion. The teaser puts together a basic “loadout” using some new additions present in Creeping Winter, and gives us our first real look at the frosty aesthetic Creeping Winter is going for.
Frost Armor. First we have this icy protection, which probably won’t protect you from the cold, but it will defend you from the attacks of the numerous hostile mobs lurking in the area. Apparently, it also comes with a neat snow particle animation, hinting at special abilities this armor may possess (randomly attacks enemies with flying snowballs, freezes enemies that attack, something else?).
Winter’s Touch. Your frozen armor wouldn’t be complete without a suitably cold weapon to accompany it, so Mojang Studios also showed off the Winter’s Touch bow. This weapon almost certainly freezes and slows enemies from a distance, judging solely by its name and appearance, but we can’t be completely certain until Creeping Winter places this new bow in our hands.
Ice Wand. We already knew from a previous developer diary that a new hostile mob in Creeping Winter can summon and drop massive ice blocks on players’ heads while fighting. Turns out, players can turn the tables with an artifact that does exactly that: summons humungous chunks of ice to promptly drop onto your enemies. Control the ice, and target it wisely. I’ll be honest, that’s a little cold.
Frosty skin. Creeping Winter wouldn’t complete without some new skins to deck out your character in, and that’s exactly what the Frosty skin aims to do. This skin definitely matches the whole “everybody is shivering” aesthetic in Creeping Winter, and should be perfect for players looking to match their hero to the environment they’re currently battling for their lives in. Or if you like being cold and miserable?
Arctic Fox. Last but certainly not least (actually consider this one my favorite) is the Arctic Fox cosmetic pet. Like the Baby Chicken and Parrot before it, the Arctic Fox technically doesn’t do anything or aid players in any way, but it’s still a must-have for any hero exploring the frozen tundra. This precious critter will follow you around the place and look adorable the whole time. not that your enemies will care.
Creeping Winter looks to be a decent injection of content for Minecraft Dungeons, possibly even besting Jungle Awakens that came before. While Jungle Awakens was a great sign of things to come, it was light on content and didn’t add a ton to the game. If Mojang Studios is already showing off new gear in Creeping Winter, that indicates there’s a lot more that they haven’t shown off. We’ll find out right alongside you on September 8, 2020.
Minecraft Dungeons is the next saga in Minecraft’s story, and Mojang Studios have knocked another one out of the park. Awesome co-op combat paired with powerful loot, all at a crazy affordable price? There’s not much more you could ask for in an epic dungeon crawling ARPG.
