MediaTek working on the Dimensity 1100, a lower clocked Dimensity 1200

MediaTek is preparing to launch its second generation of flagship 5G chipsets, among which is the Dimensity 1200 (MT6893) that has leaked so often. There’s also a lower binned version of that on the way, according to leakster Digital Chat Station.

The Dimensity 1100 will have the same hardware as the 1200, but will run at lower clock speeds. Both chips will be fabbed using a 6nm process.

The 1100 will feature four Cortex-A78 cores, which are listed at “4x 2.6 GHz”. It’s not quite clear if that means all four of them will run at that speed or if that’s the frequency for the top core.

The power-efficient Cortex-A55 remain at 2.0 GHz, which seems to be their sweet spot. The GPU is not explicitly mentioned, but is presumably a Mali-G77 like on the higher end chip (with lower clocks, of course).

Display support will be cut back a bit, from 168Hz refresh rate support to 144Hz, at 1080p+ resolution in both cases. Since we’re yet to see a 168Hz display on a smartphone, this change may not amount to much.

Anyway, the chipset also supports cameras with up to 108 MP sensors as well as LPDDR4x RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. What kind of performance can we expect from the Dimensity 1100? That’s not clear as it hasn’t run any benchmarks yet (not ones that have leaked, at least).

But the 1200 already topped the Snapdragon 865 in an AnTuTu test and posted a higher single core result in Geekbench than the Dimensity 1000+. Of course, it helps that the 1200 runs its prime core at 3.0 GHz and the other three at 2.6 GHz (which suggests its quite possible that the 1100 will run all four at 2.6 GHz). So, we could see Snapdragon 855/855+ level of performance out of the 1100 chip.

The Redmi K40 series will launch next month and the brand has officially confirmed that one of the phones will be powered by the Snapdragon 888. VP Lu Weibing also teased that a Dimensity chipset will be used, and DCS suggests that this will be either the 1100 or 1200.

MediaTek has scheduled a big chipset event for January 20 (this Wednesday), so we’ll see the new Dimensity chips in a couple of days. This then opens the door for Redmi to launch the K40 phones.
