MediaTek teases Dimensity 8000 chip, leaks reveal 5nm node, Mali-G510 GPU

At today’s press conference MediaTek confirmed that the hotly anticipated Dimensity 9000 chipset will be used in the Oppo Find X4 and Redmi K50 phones. At the same event the company also teased a new chip, the Dimensity 8000, which will be a lower cost alternative (the 9000 is expected to be pricey).

While the company mentioned the chip at its presentations, it is not yet ready to reveal the details about it. Leakster Digital Chat Station has no hang-ups, however. This chip will be fabbed on TSMC’s 5 nm process instead of the cutting-edge 4 nm process. Still, it will offer a nice upgrade over the Dimensity 1000-series, most of which used the 6 nm node instead.

More interesting is that the 8000 chip will use the older ARMv8 designs with four Cortex-A78 (2.75 GHz) and four A55 (2.0 GHz) CPU cores instead of the new A710/A510 used in the 9000. Even more interesting is that the older cores will be paired with a new Mali-G510 MC6 GPU. The G510 is twice as fast and 22% more energy efficient than the previous generation of ARM GPUs.

That powerful but efficient GPU may make this a popular chipset for premium mid-rangers. Redmi and Realme are reportedly interested. The chipset supports 168 Hz displays at 1080p+ resolution and 120 Hz at 1440p+ resolution. For memory, it can be hooked up to LPDDR5 and UFS 3.1.

This design originally leaked as the Dimensity 7000, but now the Dimensity 8000 name was officially presented on stage. Expect to see the first phones with the new chipset arrive in 2022 (Realme’s Head of Advertising Xu Qi Chase seems to be showing interest).
