LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga features nearly 500 playable characters

It wouldn’t be May The Fourth without some Star Wars announcements. This one just happens to be slightly underwhelming. Traveller’s Tales revealed new key art for the upcoming LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga… but we did not get a release date to speak of.

In an interview with StarWars.com, Lucasfilm Games Managing Producer Craig Derrick talked about building this bundle from the ground up.

Look, if you had one shot or one opportunity to build a LEGO Star Wars game from the ground up that brings all nine films of the Skywalker saga together for the first time in one moment, would you capture it or just let it slip? We all knew early that to do this right, we had to do it well, and to respect what has come before while bringing new elements to the franchise. We needed the game to feel epic in scope and scale while bringing the player intimately closer to the action like never before. This required new technology, new game mechanics, and a passionate team of developers to create a cast of hundreds and all the familiar worlds they populate — all with the charm and humor you expect with a LEGO Star Wars game. Quite frankly, this game is massive because it had to be.

When it releases later this year, fans will be able to play as nearly 500 characters from the iconic franchise. Don’t worry about needing to play each movie in order, either. Players have the freedom to jump into and film at any time to relive their favorite moments.

We expect to learn more about the game later in the summer. With E3 cancelled, it could possibly show up during Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest.
