Understanding the difference between class and job

In Final Fantasy XIV, classes and jobs are two different things, though they are often used interchangeably. When you start the game, you’re introduced to different disciplines and choose to be a Disciple of War or a Disciple of Magic — this will determine your class. A Disciple of War uses physical melee and ranged weapons as their primary means of attack, while Disciples of Magic use magical spells or healing spells that use MP.

As you level up your class, you will be able to branch out into different jobs, but they may serve the same role. For example, a Gladiator class will become a Paladin and a Marauder will become a Warrior, but they both serve the role of tank in combat, with different abilities at their disposal. To level up your class, you must complete the quests within your guild.

Most jobs, however, were added by Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers expansion packs and aren’t associated with a class, though they can be sorted into one of five roles. Also, if you choose a job you don’t like, don’t worry. Switching between jobs is as simple as joining the Guild and equipping the proper gear.
