I’ve reviewed hundreds of PCs, and this is the laptop I’d buy on Prime Day

There are tons of laptops on sale for right now, but finding the right one for you can be difficult. Our collection of the best Prime Day laptop deals has a ton of great options, including the HP ENVY x360 15. It’s a laptop I reviewed just a few weeks ago, and it still stands out to me. While I usually move onto the next PC that needs testing, this one has remained on my desk and will likely continue to be my go-to for the foreseeable future. It’s that good.

When I reviewed the HP ENVY x360 15, the cheapest price was about $800 for an introductory model with Ryzen 5 CPU. Thanks to HP’s own sales event that coincides with Amazon’s Prime Day, a model with upgraded Ryzen 7 CPU is down to just $720, or $150 off the regular price. That’s an exceptional deal, and there’s plenty of opportunity to tweak the hardware to your liking as your budget allows.

The ENVY x360 is a 15.6-inch convertible PC with a design that could easily be mistaken as coming from a premium lineup. Its aluminum body measures just 0.72 inches (18.3mm) thin and it weighs in at just 4.11 pounds (1.86kg). For a 15-inch convertible device with an all-metal body, that’s not bad. The laptop is thin, but it still includes USB-C 3.1 (Gen 2), two USB-A 3.1 (Gen 2), HDMI 2.0, 3.5mm audio, and an SD card reader. There’s no Thunderbolt due to the AMD platform, but it does have Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0.

There’s a physical webcam shutter enabled by a dedicated keyboard button, and a fingerprint reader lives next to the arrow keys for quick and secure logins. The keyboard is super comfortable for extended typing binges — I use it for thousands of words each day — and the enormous Precision touchpad is smooth with plenty of room for shortcuts.

The review unit I tested has the upgraded FHD touch display in it, available for an extra $80 on top of the sale price here. It’s no doubt worth it if you have the budget due to extra brightness. Still, the base display comes with solid color reproduction and active pen support. Thanks to it being a convertible, the lid can rotate around 360 degrees for tent, stand, and tablet modes.

Performance is where this laptop really shines. The AMD Ryzen 7 5700U has eight cores and a clock speed up to 4.3GHz. It beat out the majority of all laptops we’ve recently reviewed in multiple synthetic benchmarks, yet it remained cool and was able to last more than 14 hours on a battery charge. That’s impressive.

As long as you don’t need a 4K display, discrete GPU, or Thunderbolt connectivity, this is one killer laptop that’s available at an even deeper bargain than normal. If I have to recommend one laptop to buy during Prime Day sales, this is the one.
