Is Samsung working on next-gen XISO-CELL camera sensors?

For years now, Samsung has been making smartphone camera sensors with the ISOCELL branding. This branding was first used during the launch of the Galaxy S5, and over the years, the company also used ISOCELL Plus and ISOCELL 2.0 branding for its sensors. Now, it looks like the company is working on its next-generation camera sensors with a different branding.

Samsung recently applied for trademark rights for the XISO-CELL (via GalaxyClub) branding with KIPRIS (Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service) in South Korea. Apart from the branding and its font, not much can be said about it. It is also impossible to say whether this new branding will be used for the Galaxy S23’s camera sensor, which will be Samsung’s first smartphone with a 200MP camera.

The ISOCELL branding originated from the words ‘isolated cells,’ which was Samsung’s way to reduce interference and noise from two adjoining pixels in a camera. And we are not sure how adding an X in front of the current ISOCELL branding relates to its performance or qualities.

Over the past few months, it has been rumored that the Galaxy S23 Ultra will feature sensor-shift OIS, similar to the iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 13 Pro series, and the iPhone 14 Pro series. It remains to be seen if that information is correct and if it relates to Samsung’s new XISO-CELL branding in any manner. The Galaxy S23 series is expected to be unveiled in February 2023.
