Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro diving smartwatch will drop on 28 April

Huawei has confirmed that it will launch a Huawei Watch GT 3 smartwatch on 28 April.

The company has dropped a teaser for its smartwatch, which will launch at a press conference alongside a new Huawei Mate XS 2 smartphone.

And while the exact features remain a mystery until the event, Huawei has revealed that enhanced water resistance is a major feature of the new smartwatch.

The GT Pro 3 has reportedly been slapped with EN13319 diving resistance certification, so it will stand up to 30 metres of deep sea diving.

That’s in addition to IP68 and 5ATM water resistance too – so it should be perfectly at home in the water. That matches most current smartwatches, which can handle life in the pool but aren’t suited to ‘high velocity water’ associated with diving and other activities.

Other than that, we don’t have too much idea what the GT 3 Pro will bring. However, based on the GT 2 Pro that launched in 2020, we’re assuming premium case materials and a bigger price tag.

And the standard array of GPS tracking and smartwatch features delivered via the company’s own HarmonyOS seems nailed on.

There’s been speculation of a rugged Apple Watch, which could feature improved water resistance for more extreme sports – so there’s a chance that Huawei is flexing its muscles here and laying claim to that USP.

Differentiation is becoming a precious commodity in wearables, as smartwatches are largely launching with similar features and sensors.

A smartwatch/diving watch hybrid would be a refreshing addition to the smartwatch market, especially if Huawei taps into the dive watch aesthetic – just as Withings has done with the ScanWatch Horizon.

Stay tuned for more details on Thursday 28 April.
