Huami shows off its Amazfit GTS smartwatch at IFA 2019

Huami has used IFA 2019 to show off its recently-announced Amazfit GTS, an Apple Watch-like square-format smartwatch.

With a slightly curved 2.5D screen and metal body, the watch is a ringer for the Apple Watch Series 4, but Huami says it sees it as a big step forward for its design practices and templates.

Its 1.65-inch AMOLED screen has a pixel resolution of 348 x 442, amounting to 341 pixels per inch (PPI), slightly higher than the Apple Watch Series 4.

The GTS’s body is made of aluminum alloy, is 9.4mm thick, and weighs 24.8g. This also makes it a shade thinner than the Series 4, and a good chunk lighter, too. You’ll have six different color options to choose from.

The screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 3 and housed in a steel frame. The watch will ship with 40 customizable faces to choose from, with up to 100 in total to come after release.

The Amazfit GTS is waterproof to 5ATM, meaning it can withstand being submerged down to 50 meters for 10 minutes, and will be fine for swimming. It also packs in NFC for contactless payments and an optical heart rate sensor to offer 24 hour monitoring.

With a 220mAh battery, the watch can last for 14 days by standard, according to Huami, although continuous use of its GPS and GLONASS tracking will bring this down to 25 hours. A basic functionality mode will turn the Bluetooth connectivity and the heart rate monitor off, but raise the battery life to 46 days.

The GTS should be useful for sports tracking too, with Huami saying that it comes with 12 different sports modes to choose from, including running, swimming, trail running and skiing.

The GTS is available to pre-order in China now, priced at CNY 899 (around $125), ahead of release in late September.
