How well does the Surface Pro X handle external displays?

Best answer: Yes, the Surface Pro X supports dual 4K external displays. Thanks to USB-C 3.1 connectivity, you should have no issues connecting dual 4K displays at a 60Hz refresh rate using a single port.

The Surface Pro X is a thinner, more portable version of the Pro lineup that’s ARM-powered thanks to a custom Microsoft SQ1 processor. For connectivity, it includes two USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 ports, as well as Surface Connect and a Nano SIM slot for LTE.

As we saw in an enlightening Microsoft Mechanics video, the Pro X is capable of powering two 4K displays at a 60Hz refresh rate from one USB-C port, leaving the other open for a hub, dock, or other accessories.

Considering the Pro X doesn’t include a 3.5mm audio jack, you might be connecting a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter. You might also consider a separate docking station, like Dell’s D6000 Universal USB-C dock that offers extra video ports, 3.5mm audio, RJ45 Ethernet, and USB-A. You could also leave the other USB-C port free for charging.

What about the Surface Connect port?

The Surface Connect port could be used to hook up a Surface Dock, but the official hardware is quite outdated and in need of a refresh shortly. It would leave both USB-C ports free on the Surface Pro X, but it’s a significant investment and one that is already basically outdated when it arrives.

What 4K monitors do we recommend?

Most 4K monitors should have no issues working with your Surface Pro X. Still, for the least amount of headaches resulting from dongles and adapters, we recommend checking out a 4K display with USB-C connectivity.

HP’s Z27 is a 27-inch 4K display with 60Hz refresh rate, IPS panel with wide viewing angles, 350 nits brightness, and excellent contrast. It has a thin bezel and an adjustable stand so you can comfortably set two monitors next to each other for a quality workstation. It also comes with a strong warranty that protects against standard issues as well as pixel defects.

If you’d like to get a workstation going with the Pro X as its anchor, these monitors should make a great companion.
