Best Fixes for Attachments Not Showing in Outlook Mac Issue

The following troubleshooting methods are good for various Outlook for Mac app versions like Outlook for Microsoft 365 for Mac, Outlook 2019 for Mac, Outlook 2021 for Mac, etc.

1. Check With the Sender

If you don’t see any attachments in an email sent by a colleague or friend but they’re claiming they did attach files to the email, double-check with the email sender. When the attachment you’re expecting is any EXE or DMG or PKG file, then Outlook may not have allowed it and the sender didn’t notice either.

Not just for Outlook, it’s also for other popular email clients like Gmail. If the sender ignored the warning of an unsupported attachment on the email and clicked the send button, then you won’t receive the attachment.

2. Get a Compatible App for the Attachment

macOS Preview mostly handles all the attachment preview tasks. However, some attachments may not show a thumbnail or quick view if a specific application isn’t present on your MacBook or iMac.

Thus, check the attachment extension file name and download the related software from Mac AppStore.

3. Open Email in the Outlook Web App

If the sender confirmed that they did send the attachment, then it could be a server sync issue with the Outlook app. To rule out any global Outlook app issue, try to access your email on the Outlook Web App (business user) or Outlook on the Web app (individual users).

Suppose, you see that the attachment is available on Outlook’s web version, then the issue is local and only specific to your macOS Outlook installation. For such problems, continue with the following troubleshooting methods:

4. Open Email in New Window

Open your Outlook for Mac app and check for the attachment or paperclip icon on the email in the left-side Inbox navigation pane. If the paperclip icon is available, it means there’s an attachment for sure.

You should see the Download and Preview buttons just below the attachments. And the attachments will show up below the address and subject line of the email.

5. Force Sync With Outlook Servers

You can also perform a manual sync with the Outlook servers or Microsoft 365 Exchange servers. Here’s how you can perform a sync on Outlook:

  • Open Outlook and look at the Outlook ribbon for the Sync button.
  • If the Sync button isn’t available, click Elispses or the kebab menu and add the Sync option from the Customize Toolbar setting.
