Google’s first smartwatch could use a four-year-old Exynos chipset

Google showed off a ton of hardware and software earlier this week. Apart from the Pixel 6A and the Pixel Buds Pro, the company revealed the Pixel Watch, Pixel 7 series, and the Pixel Tablet. But Samsung has nothing to worry about Google’s new products, especially after looking at a new report.

9To5Google reports that Google’s first smartwatch, which will launch later this year, will use a four-year-old Exynos processor. That’s right. The Pixel Watch reportedly features the Exynos 9110 chipset that debuted with the original Galaxy Watch in 2018. Let that sink in for a moment.

Google may have started the development of the Pixel Watch quite early. And by the time Samsung launched the Galaxy Watch 4 in late 2021 with the 5nm Exynos W920, it may have been too late for Google to change the chipset. Compared to the Exynos 9110, the Exynos W920 is much faster: 20% faster CPU and 1000% faster graphics.

The situation was so bad in the Wear OS smartwatch ecosystem before the Galaxy Watch 4 that even the four-year-old Exynos 9110 is more power-efficient than the Snapdragon Wear 4100+. Qualcomm’s best wearable chipset is fabricated using a 12nm process, while the Exynos 9110 is made using a 10nm process.

By the time the Pixel Watch hits the market, Samsung would’ve launched the Galaxy Watch 5. The Pixel Watch reportedly uses a 300mAh battery, which means that it might not stand any chance against the Galaxy Watch 5’s 572mAh battery and a 5nm chipset.
