Google’s first foldable phone may not perform as well as Galaxy Z Fold 4

Samsung has been selling foldable phones for four years, and Google is expected to launch its first foldable phone in the first half of 2023. However, the upcoming Pixel Fold smartphone may not be able to perform as well as the Galaxy Z Fold 4, and there’s a reason why.

The Pixel Fold with the codename ‘Felix’ has appeared in Geekbench’s database (via MySmartPrice), revealing its chipset and possible performance level. The device seems to be equipped with the Tensor G2 processor, which has two ARM Cortex-X1 CPU cores clocked at 2.85GHz, two ARM Cortex-A78 CPU cores clocked at 2.35GHz, and four ARM Cortex-A55 CPU cores clocked at 1.8GHz. The device also features 12GB RAM, similar to the Pixel 7 Pro.

The upcoming device is running Android 13 and scored 1,047 points in the single-core CPU performance test and 3,257 points in the multi-core CPU performance test. Although it is not running the final software, the score appears quite lower than the Galaxy Z Fold 4’s performance, which scores around 1,337 points in the single-core CPU test and around 4,028 points in the multi-core CPU test.

Nine months after its launch, Galaxy Z Fold 4 will still be faster than the upcoming Google Pixel Fold

The Pixel 7 Pro, which uses the same Tensor G2 chipset, scores 1,056 points in the single-core test and 3,187 points in the multi-core test, even while running stable software. The Galaxy Z Fold 4’s GPU performs around 50% faster than the Tensor G2, so we don’t expect the Pixel Fold to perform nearly as well as Samsung’s latest foldable.

By the time Pixel Fold launches sometime in May 2023, it would be close to the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 5. Samsung’s next-generation flagship foldable phone is expected to come equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, which annihilates the Tensor G2 in terms of performance. So, it would be the camera and software where the Pixel Fold needs to perform really well to compete against the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Galaxy Z Fold 5.

The Pixel Fold smartphone could have a 6.19-inch cover display and an 8-inch inner foldable display featuring a 120Hz refresh rate. The device could have two 9.5MP selfie cameras placed within hole-punch-shaped display cutouts. On the rear, it could have the same triple-camera setup as the Pixel 7 Pro, featuring a 50MP primary camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and a 48MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom.
