Google reportedly cancels plans to release Pixelbook in 2023

Within the last year, Google showed its efforts to improve areas outside of Android including both tablets with the launch of Android 12L, and wearables with its incoming Pixel Watch. Laptops was another area that Google was working towards expanding next year and we learn in a report from The Verge that Google was planning to launch a new Pixelbook, but those plans have now been cancelled.

The project’s cancellation was part of recent cost-cutting decisions internally at Google and members that worked on the Pixelbook have been transferred to other departments. The Verge recalls when Google hardware chief Rick Osterloh mentioned to the outlet that Google was “going to do Pixelbooks in the future”.

A Google spokesperson told The Verge “Google doesn’t share future product plans or personnel information; however, we are committed to building and supporting a portfolio of Google products that are innovative and helpful for our users […] In regards to our people, in times where we do shift priorities we work to transition team members across devices and services.”

Google will be announcing new hardware on October 6 including new Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, a new Pixel Watch, and some rumors suggest we may see some new Nest Home hardware as well. Though not at the next event, Google is also on track to release a Pixel foldable device sometime next year.
