Gears 5 developer didn’t want to limit game to 30 FPS on Xbox One X

What you need to know

  • Gears 5 is a third-person shooter from The Coalition.
  • Gears of War 4 ran at 30 FPS during the campaign even on Xbox One X.
  • The developer didn’t want to limit the game to 30 FPS on Xbox One X this time.
  • You can play Gears 5 through Xbox Game Pass.

Gears 5 is the latest game from Xbox Game Studios and is garnering great reviews since its early-access launch last week. The PC port is a sight to behold and seems to offer a glimpse into what a Gears 5 port on Project Scarlett would look like. However, even on Xbox One X, The Coalition wanted to focus on 60 frames per second (FPS) from the start.

In an interview between GameSpot and Gears 5’s Colin Penty, even more information about the reasoning behind the 60 FPS target was revealed. The next-generation of consoles seems to be focusing on better frame rates — up to 120 FPS — so it’s great to see that we’re getting a taste of it with Xbox One X. Penty said the following.

We put a line in the sand early on in development of Gears 5 that we wanted the campaign to be 60 FPS on Xbox One X. We didn’t want to have a compromise like Gears of War 4 where you had to choose 1080p 60 FPS or 4K 30 FPS. It was a large amount of work across a lot of disciplines to pull it off, but I really think it was worth it and is probably the best example of harnessing the additional power of the Xbox One X. For multiplayer on Xbox One X we were able to introduce additional rendering features since we are running the same frame rate as Xbox One. We have screen space reflections and higher quality ambient occlusion as a result. Our cinematics also have much higher quality reflections, lens flares, depth of field, and motion blur on the Xbox One X compared to the original Xbox One and Xbox One S.

Gears 5 is available through Xbox Game Pass. You can either purchase a subscription for $10 a month, or pay $15 a month which bundles Xbox Live Gold, Xbox Game Pass for Xbox One, and Xbox Game Pass for PC into one complete package.
