Galaxy Z Fold 3 One UI 4.0 beta breaks 120Hz refresh rate on cover display

One of the noteworthy upgrades the Galaxy Z Fold 3 brought over the Galaxy Z Fold 2 was high refresh rate support for the cover screen. Both the main display and the cover display on the Z Fold 3 can run at up to 120Hz refresh rate, which makes for a consistently smooth user experience both when the device is folded and when it isn’t.

However, it seems the recently released Android 12-based One UI 4.0 beta for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 breaks the high refresh rate on the outer screen. The outer screen runs at the standard 60Hz refresh rate on the One UI 4.0 beta firmware, an issue we have confirmed on our own units. And it seems it’s quite a widespread issue as Samsung has also taken note of it and is promising to fix it in the next One UI 4.0 beta release for the Z Fold 3.

Naturally, since this is beta software, Samsung isn’t telling us when that next update will come out, so you could be stuck without 120Hz mode on the cover screen for a couple of weeks. That goes for any other issues you may have encountered after installing the One UI 4.0 beta on your Galaxy Z Fold 3.

Of course, if you find the One UI 4.0 experience to be subpar right now, you can always revert back to Android 11 and One UI 3.1.1 using Samsung Smart Switch or by flashing firmware that you can download from our archive. Keep in mind that your device will be reset when performing the downgrade, so make sure to backup all your important data beforehand.
