Galaxy S22 gets January 2023 update in many more countries

Samsung is expanding the availability of its January 2023 security patch to the Galaxy S22 series in more regions. Carrier-unlocked S22 models in the USA were the first to get this firmware update at the beginning of January, oddly enough. And ever since that happened, the update reached more markets at a steady pace.

More recently, the January 2023 security patch started rolling out for the SM-S90xE variants in dozens more markets, including Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, Nigeria, Afghanistan, South Africa, Tunisia, Australia, Turkey, Iraq, Kenya, Israel, Egypt, the UAE, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Argentina, Bolivia, and Peru.

The update is identified by firmware version S90xEXXS2BWA2. And as you can probably tell by the second “S” letter in that string, this is purely a security patch that doesn’t add any new One UI features. If you need more information on what each letter and number in Samsung’s firmware means, check out our detailed guide on how to read and understand Samsung firmware.

If you have a Galaxy S22 in one of the markets mentioned above and you’re getting the January 2023 update, you’ll notice that the changelog won’t go into detail as to what Samsung and Google have patched. But Samsung detailed the fixes in its bulletin earlier this month. And in short, Android OS gets over 50 “high vulnerability” fixes, and One UI is getting a few patches of its own concerning Secure Folder, NFC, Samsung Knox, and other features.

You can download the January 2023 security patch on your Galaxy S22 when you receive the update notification, or you can try to trigger the process by opening the Settings app on your phone, navigating to “Software update,” and tapping “Download and install.” Alternatively, you can download official firmware files from our website and install the latest updates manually using a PC.
