Galaxy Note 20 gets January 2023 security update in the US

The Galaxy Note 10 and the Galaxy Note 10+ were the first set of phones from Samsung to get the January 2023 security patch. Now, the company is rolling out the latest security update to their successors, the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. The January 2023 security patch is currently rolling out the carrier-unlocked variants of the two devices in the US.

The latest update for the Galaxy Note 20 (SM-N981U1) and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra (SM-N986U1) comes with firmware version N98xU1UES3GVL1. It brings the January 2023 security patch, which fixes more than fifty security vulnerabilities including a security issue with Secure Folder. Currently, devices on AT&T, Comcast, Cricket, Verizon, and Xfinity Mobile’s networks are receiving the latest update.

Other variants of the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra should also get the new security patch very soon. If you own carrier-unlocked variants of the devices in the US, they should notify you about the update automatically. In case they haven’t, you can manually check for the update by going to Settings » Software updates and tapping Download and install. Alternatively, you can download the update from our database and flash it manually.

The Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra were the last phones that Samsung launched in the Galaxy Note lineup. Both the phones made their debut with Android 10, and the company has rolled out all three major OS updates that they were supposed to get, which means they are currently running on Android 13 (One UI 5.0). They will not get Android OS updates anymore, but they will keep getting security updates till 2025.
