Fall Guys was August’s top digital game, earning $185 million

Mediatonic and Devolver Digital’s adorable and silly battle royale game Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout was an instant hit, racking up 1.5 million players when it launched on Aug. 4 and hitting 2 million Steam purchases in its first week. A report by Neilsen’s SuperData Perspectives released Wednesday shows that the game maintained that momentum, becoming the top-selling digital PC game for the entire month.

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is free for PlayStation Plus members, which is part of why its initial player base was so high, but was still purchased by 8.2 million PC players. August sales totaled $185 million, making it the highest-earning launch for a PC title since Blizzard Entertainment released Overwatch in 2016. It’s a particularly impressive feat considering that Fall Guys was put out by a much smaller development team.

The SuperData Perspectives study attributed some of Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout’s success to how well the goofy and chaotic gameplay works on Twitch, where it topped viewership ahead of its launch. Digital game sales were also up 13% overall for the month hitting $10.8 billion, a 16% year-over-year increase.
