According to a report by Windows Central’s Matt Brown, the Dirt series is leaping into the next-generation, with the latest installment of its adrenaline-pumping racer headed to Microsoft’s upcoming Xbox Series X console in early 2021. Developed by a new team within Codemasters, Dirt 5 seems like it’s set to give us a truly thrilling off-road experience.

While the game is also coming to PlayStation 5 (PS5) and Google Stadia, it’s unclear what the visual quality will be like given the fact that both platforms are noticeably weaker than the Xbox Series X. During an interview after the Inside Xbox show where Dirt 5 footage was revealed, one of the developers confirmed that the game was running at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second (FPS) on the machine. However, there’s also going to be a 120 FPS option if you want it.

It’s unclear if the game will run at 4K resolution on PS5 since the console is 2-3 teraflops less powerful than the Xbox Series X. Stadia can’t stream more than 60 FPS at the moment and doesn’t render the majority of games at 4K resolution so that takes it out of the running for the 120 FPS mode, unless Google launches the technology by early 2021. We’ll keep you posted as soon as we know more.

Codemasters also jumped on board the Smart Delivery program, enabling cross-generation upgrades for supported titles. For example, purchasing Dirt 5 secures a version across the Xbox One family, with a free upgraded copy for Xbox Series X.
