DaVinci Resolve vs. Adobe Premiere Rush: Which Should You Use on Your iPad?

Earlier in 2022, Blackmagic Design announced that it would introduce DaVinci Resolve to iPad devices. Considering its huge success among video editors on computers, many creators praised this decision – and since then, they’ve eagerly anticipated its release.

You’ll find a selection of video editing apps on the iPad already, and one of these is Adobe Premiere Rush. With that in mind, you might want to do a bit of research before you switch to DaVinci Resolve.

In this article, we’ll talk about Blackmagic Design’s plans for DaVinci Resolve on the iPad – and compare the app to Premiere Rush. Without further ado, let’s jump into the swing of things.

What Is DaVinci Resolve?

DaVinci Resolve is a video-editing solution created by Blackmagic Design. The app has gained significant traction in recent years, but it’s actually pretty old; it was first released in 2004. Millions of people around the world use the software, including some of the world’s biggest YouTubers.

Despite being one of the best video solutions on the market, DaVinci Resolve offers most of its services for free. You can upgrade to a paid version, but the free edition offers almost everything that most video editors will need.

At the time of writing on December 21st, 2022, the app still hasn’t gone live on the iPad App Store. But considering that DaVinci Resolve 18.1 recently made its way onto the scene, it hopefully shouldn’t be too long before we see it rolled out to tablets.

What Is Adobe Premiere Rush?

Unlike DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere Rush has been on the iPad App Store for a while. The app was initially released in 2018, and it forms part of Adobe’s Creative Cloud suite.

Premiere Rush is effectively a mobile-optimized version of Premiere Pro, which is Adobe’s flagship video editing product. You’ll find a lot of the same features that also exist in Premiere Pro, but many of them are also removed.

Premiere Rush is free to use; you just need to sign up for an Adobe Creative Cloud account. You would, however, need to purchase a paid subscription to use Premiere Pro instead.

Download Adobe Premiere Rush for iPad

Now that we’ve discussed the basics of DaVinci Resolve and Adobe Premiere Rush, let’s look at how the two compare to one another.

Availability

One big difference between Adobe Premiere Rush and DaVinci Resolve is where you can find these apps. In addition to the iPad (when it’s released on that platform), you can also use DaVinci Resolve on your computer. It’s available on MacBooks, iMacs, and devices that run on Windows instead.

To use DaVinci Resolve on an iPad, your device must be compatible with iPadOS 16.

In addition to iPads, you can also use Premiere Rush if you have an iPhone. On top of that, you can download a desktop version of the app if you use a Mac. Premiere Rush is also available on some other operating systems, such as Android.

File Editing

These days, even smartphones can shoot amazing video footage. And when you’re thinking about downloading a platform to edit your content, knowing what you can and can’t adjust is a good idea. The good news is that both DaVinci Resolve and Premiere Rush offer flexibility in this respect.

When DaVinci Resolve rolls out to the iPad, you’ll be able to edit 4K videos. That content can come from your smartphone, but it’s also possible if you use an ordinary camera instead.

With Premiere Rush, you also have the option to edit 4K footage. You will, of course, need to consider that editing 4K will likely consume more of your battery life than if you were adjusting something at a lower resolution.

Features

Another important thing to look at when picking your video editing platform is what features you’ll find. One of the most important ones with DaVinci Resolve is that, via the Blackmagic Design cloud, you can easily continue editing your content from your iPad if you begin on a desktop device.

When using DaVinci Resolve on your iPad, you can also collaborate with multiple users. In addition to that, the app will include multiple color grading options.

The DaVinci Resolve iPad app has several other benefits worth looking at, too. For example, you’ll be able to see charts to ensure that your colors are correct.

In Premiere Rush, you similarly have multiple options for editing your video projects. You can add transitions to your footage, for example, making your films look more interesting. Moreover, you’ll find a selection of presets that you can add to your clips – along with picking the correct intensity.

Premiere Rush also lets you change the speed of your footage and add various forms of audio, such as different sound effects and music.

Sharing and Exporting

Once you’ve finished editing your video project, you’ll want to think about how you can export your content elsewhere. Doing so with Premiere Rush is easy; you can export your films directly to your iPad camera roll.

In Premiere Rush, you also have the option to share your videos on multiple social media platforms – including Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok.

At the time of writing, we don’t have much information about DaVinci Resolve’s export settings for your iPad. However, since you can move projects around in the cloud, you should be able to export your content to your desired place from a desktop device – if it’s not available on your iPad. DaVinci Resolve lets you export to your hard drive, along with Twitter, YouTube, and multiple other places.

Who Should Consider Using DaVinci Resolve on iPad?

DaVinci Resolve and Adobe Premiere Rush have different audiences, and the best platform for you depends largely on your individual needs. If you’re a professional filmmaker or YouTuber, and you need something more powerful to edit your video content, you should consider using DaVinci Resolve when it’s rolled out to iPad users.

If you’re already using DaVinci Resolve on your computer, it also makes sense to use the iPad version once it’s released. You will, of course, need to have an iPad that allows you to do so.

You can also use DaVinci Resolve if you want to edit and publish short-form video content. But at the same time, you might find a simpler tool more convenient.

Who Should Consider Using Adobe Premiere Rush on iPad?

If you don’t have an iPad that supports DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Rush is the more convenient option. And if you’re already signed up to Adobe Creative Cloud, you’ll similarly find the tool pretty useful.

While Premiere Rush isn’t identical to Premiere Pro, the two have enough similarities to ensure that you won’t need a huge learning curve. Premiere Rush is also a great option if you want to quickly edit short-form video content, such as Reels, and export it to social media.

DaVinci Resolve and Adobe Premiere Rush: Different Functions for Different iPad Users

DaVinci Resolve is one of the most popular video editing tools out there, and we’re excited for its full release on the iPad. In the meantime, you can still enjoy all of its benefits from your desktop device – and when it rolls out, you shouldn’t have a huge learning curve.

Premiere Rush has been on iPads for a while, and it’s easy to use the tool on other devices as well. You’ll find numerous solutions to help you edit your video content, and it’s a fantastic tool for making both quick edits and producing longer-form content. While you’ll need to stick with Premiere Rush on the iPad for now, it’s worth trying DaVinci Resolve when it rolls out.
