Counterpoint: US smartphone sales continue to slump in Q3, Apple doing better than expected
Counterpoint released its early Q3 2019 smartphone sales report for the US and the numbers indicate slower sales compared to the same period last year. In August alone smartphone sales dipped by 4% as the market saw 11.3 million units move. The combined values for July and August show an even greater slump to 10%.
As expected Apple was dominant in September with the new iPhone 11 launch posting higher interest than last year’s models. The iPhone 11 Pro Max garnered the highest demand out of the three new iPhones during pre-sales and the opening week period but Counterpoint expects a shift in favor of the more affordable vanilla iPhone 11 in the coming months.
Looking at Samsung’s corner, the Galaxy S10 is still the preferred Android flagship on all major US carriers despite lowered demand in the past months. Sales of the midrange A10e, A20 and A50 have been solid while the Note10 lineup has seen underwhelming demand compared to the Note9. Samsung still holds the title for the best selling 5G phone on the US market with the Galaxy S10 5G despite less than impressive 5G adaption rates.
