Canalys: Global smartphone shipments in Q1 totaled 270 million units, market still contracting

Global smartphone shipments continued to plummet during the January-March period with 269.8 million units shipped based on the latest report from Canalys. The figure is 13% lower than the same period last year and continues the negative trend seen in past quarters due to a mix of factors including inventory build-up and limited consumer demand.

Samsung shipped 60.3 million smartphones in Q1 which translated in a 22% market share. Samsung’s revamped Galaxy S and Galaxy A portfolios led to the bounce back. Apple came in second with 58 million shipments and a 21% share of the market. Cupertino continues to see strong demand for its iPhone 14 Pro series and was the only vendor on the list with positive annual growth. Xiaomi rounds off the top three with 30.5 million shipments and an 11% market share but it also boasted the largest decline in market share on a yearly basis.
