Amazfit Pop Pro is a sporty smartwatch aimed at kids

Amazfit has launched a smartwatch for kids, as it expands its range of wearable devices.

After a quiet year for Huami (or Zepp Health in the West) the Amazfit Pop Pro was announced on Weibo for release in China.

It’s an insane moniker given that the Pop Pro already exists as an adult smartwatch in India, and that there’s nothing ‘professional’ about this kids smartwatch whatsoever.

The new Pop Pro represents the first kids focussed wearable from Huami, although like its adult-focussed smartwatches, it does put fitness and health features front and center.

The kids Amazfit Pop Pro features a colourful design and rubber strap, and it’s hard to miss the front-facing camera, which is designed to take fun snaps from the wrist.

But for a kids smartwatch it packs quite a lot of grown-up sounding features.

There’s 24/7 heart rate tracking and sleep monitoring, and there are a host of sports tracking modes for kids to try as well. Those include running, rope skipping – and all kid’s favourite workout – sit ups.

It’s IP68 rated, so will withstand time in the water, and includes 4G support – although it’s not clear whether that will extend to location tracking or whether it’s just so parents can get hold of children without them requiring a smartphone.

It’s only set to go on sale in China for now, and there’s no pricing as yet. There’s no news of a wider release – although few brands have really cracked the kids smartwatch market outside of China.

We’ve seen Fitbit and Garmin release child-friendly fitness trackers, which have morphed into smartwatch-style devices in the past year. Apple has also enabled parents to turn older Apple Watch models into kids smartwatches.

There’s a turning tide of interest in kids wearables, and it looks like Amazfit could join the party.
