Many companies at CES are quick to claim their product is a “world’s first,” but few actually are. With 3M, however, that is an accurate description, revealing a self-charging headset at CES 2024. This device, the first of its kind in the worksite equipment space, harnesses outdoor and indoor light to generate continuous energy, marking a potential shift away from reliance on single-use batteries.

The 3M PELTOR WS ALERT XP Headset is equipped with solar cell technology and can recharge its built-in lithium-ion battery in various lighting conditions. It includes features such as Bluetooth 4.2, a noise canceling microphone, and a Push-to-Listen (PTL) feature to help workers stay aware of their surroundings. Designed for worksite use, the buttons are also glove-friendly.

Users can use the 3M Connected Equipment app to monitor their phones’ solar cell energy levels. The headset also supports Over-the-Air (OTA) updates, extending its lifespan.

This product is set to be available for purchase in March 2024, though a final price has not been set. While it won’t cater to most consumers, this device may be a game changer in industries such as aviation or construction, where workers in noisy outdoor areas could benefit significantly from solar-powered communication.
