Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 shock name change rumored – and could be released 5 August

We thought we had the new Samsung Galaxy Watch 2 all figured out – but new certifications may have thrown up an unexpected twist in the tale.

A new certification in Thailand actually lists the new smartwatch as the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 – when it’s actually just the second device in the range.

That may seem a small detail, but it could be a significant one.

Moving to Galaxy Watch 3 could signal a unification of the Galaxy Watch range, and the end of the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active range altogether.

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 is the company’s current flagship smartwatch, but this could be the end of the line for the range. It was thinner, lighter and more sport friendly than its dressier bigger brother, but that could be about to change.

We know that the new Galaxy Watch is set to shrink in size to 41mm and 45mm case sizes, packs in GPS, heart rate.

What’s more, Samsung has admitted that new smartwatches will also have the ability to track blood pressure and ECG.

With such a focus on health and wellness, it would no longer make sense for there to be separate Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Watch Active ranges – so skipping a generation could align the two nicely going forward.

So when will we see the release of the new Samsung Galaxy Watch? Well, the company has traditionally launched smartwatches alongside Galaxy Note smartphones – and it’s also leaked that its Unpacked event will be 5 August 2020.
