New app turns your Apple Watch into a personal trainer

DeltaTrack is a new Apple Watch personal training app that coaches and adapts your training using the data straight from your smartwatch.

The $100 a month service pairs you to a real human personal trainer, that receives the data straight from your wrist, and will design bespoke plans to meet your goals. You also get an Apple Watch Series 3 free of charge as part of the sign up.

Hot on the heels of gym wearables such as the Whoop Band 3.0, DeltaTrack uses the sensors on your wrist to monitor your workouts, which are then sent back to your remote PT.

Your PT can then update your schedule based on your performance, changing things like weights and reps.

Workouts are guided using audio feedback, and the watch can detect when a particular set has begun. There are also guides to each workout located on the watch.

And what’s impressive about the DeltaTrack spec sheet is the amount of data collected from the wrist.

The app claims to measure explosiveness, fatigue, form, power output, heart rate, and calories burned. And all of these data points feed back as part of your performance overview, which is reviewed by your trainer.

That would make for a brilliant workout tracker – but this has been a problematic area for wearables historically. Tracking the form of a pull-up or press up from one data point on the wrist isn’t easy. We’ve found that even reliable rep counting can be a problem, let alone getting all this extra data.

Here’s the kicker though. The service will cost $100 a month, although you will get an Apple Watch as part of that plan. For those who already own an Apple Watch, it’s the same price. However, there’s no obligation or minimal contract. There’s a 30 day free trial too.

Of course, the accelerometer in the Apple Watch Series 5 and Series 4 has been improved to allow for features like fall detection – so it will be interesting to see how much data can be extracted.

That’s nearly as much as a real human personal trainer – at least for a couple of sessions a month. But for those who don’t have access to a gym, DeltaTrack could be a smart option – at least for the no obligation trial.
