Huawei launches GT2 Pro with ECG and Band 6 Pro

Huawei has launched two new wearables in China, as it adds ECG to its devices for the first time.

The Huawei Watch GT2 Pro adds electrocardiogram technology, in what is otherwise an incremental upgrade from the GT 2 Pro.

And the Huawei Band 6 Pro adds body temperature sensing to the fitness band.

For the uninitiated the Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro was the company’s leading smartwatch, until the Huawei Watch 3 with Harmony OS was launched earlier this year.

It comes with a 1.39-inch AMOLED display, sapphire glass and a titanium case. The standard version is pretty health focused with heart rate, SpO2, stress tracking and sleep monitoring – but the presence of ECG puts it into an elite cohort of wearables, with Apple, Fitbit, Samsung and Withings.

But don’t expect it to see it in the West any time soon. The FDA and CE needs to clear ECG monitors for use. Given Huawei is essentially barred from the US, and its products don’t get official releases there, there’s zero chance of it getting FDA approval.

European certification is slightly more realistic – and has signed off on Withings ECG. Huawei does enjoy decent sales in Europe, so it’s a possibility.

Temperature tracking on the Band 6 Pro is less exciting, and we weren’t impressed by the feature’s implementation on other members of Huawei’s wearables range. It doesn’t help establish normal baselines and nor does it offer a long term view of trends, undermining its usefulness.

But the Band 6 Pro does include a 1.47-inch AMOLED display heart rate, blood oxygen, sleep monitoring and stress tracking – and offers battery life of two weeks. That makes it one of the most powerful fitness trackers on the market, even if some of its features don’t enjoy the same analysis and implementation as rivals.

The Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro with ECG will launch for CNY 3,088 ($478). The Band 6 Pro will retail in China for CNY 449 ($69).

There’s no word on a wider release for either device.
